Community Connection
Seema Bhansali, Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, speaks with Debra Fraser-Howze, Founder of Choose Healthy Life, on increasing awareness and acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine among communities of color.

We are excited to launch the next phase of "Wearing is Caring," a Henry Schein Cares Foundation public health campaign in partnership with The UPS Foundation. This third phase is focused on promoting health equity regarding education on and access to the COVID-19 vaccines.

Awareness of and access to COVID-19 vaccines is critical to helping us navigate out of this pandemic. However, much work remains in engaging underserved communities, particularly within communities of color that have been more severely impacted by COVID-19 due to gaps in health care access, employment and working conditions, education, income, and wealth.

To help reinforce the importance of COVID-19 vaccinations, Henry Schein and its Foundation will be supporting the following organizations:

  • Choose Healthy Life is an initiative that ensures Black churches—the oldest and most trusted institutions in the Black community—receive the necessary resources, training, and support to address COVID-19 and other health disparities by making available health services to hard-to-reach communities.
  • Society of American Indian Dentists (SAID) is a national, non-profit organization comprised of oral health professionals and students dedicated to promoting and improving the oral health of the American Indian/Alaskan Native community and providing advocacy for American Indian/Alaskan Native dental professionals across the U.S.
  • Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) are comprised of the Bitterroot Salish, the Pend d'Oreille and the Kootenai tribes. Their mission is to adopt traditional principles and values into all facets of tribal operations and services so that its tribes become a completely self-sufficient society and economy.
  • Hispanic Dental Association is the leading voice for Hispanic Oral Health. The organization provides service, education-research, advocacy, and leadership for all healthcare professionals, to promote overall health of the Hispanic/Latinx and underrepresented communities in support of their community Outreach Program in target areas, nationally.

Magic Tooth Bus provides Oral Health Education and Dental Screenings for Head Start Agencies and Low-Income Children and Families in San Francisco

Henry Schein is proud to support Magic Tooth Bus with in-kind products as they served approximately 3,000 people this year. The mission of Magic Tooth Bus (MTB) is to provide accessible dental care and education to low-income communities in San Francisco. MTB envisions a world free of dental disease. Their values are centered on equity, accessibility, and the community.

MTB works to carry out the mission by providing oral health presentations and workshops; outreach services such as assisting with oral health enrollment and providing resources for care; brushing and flossing demonstrations; and is in the process of commencing mobile oral health screenings and preventative services. MTB programs target all populations, including historically underserved and low-income children, families, and homeless populations in African American, Pacific Islander, Asian, Native American, and Latinx communities. Low-income and homeless communities are disproportionately plagued by dental disease due to systematic historical oppression. In fact, these communities served are eight times more likely to experience tooth decay before the age of 5. Magic Tooth Bus value in community-focus ensures that they have a holistic culturally competent approach to their services. Ultimately, MTB believes that dental health is a human right. Their goal is to build a healthier community by decreasing the rate of cavity prevalence and dental diseases. Magic Tooth Bus provides a fun, creative and engaging curriculum to present to students and families on sites. Magic Tooth Bus creates a magical experience for the children in San Francisco by giving them oral health tips and quicker access to dental services.

To date, Magic Tooth Bus has helped over 2,500 low-income families, easily surpassing 3,000 people. They've done this through partnerships with CBO's, Head Start, SF Unified School District and Henry Schein. Magic Tooth Bus is a resource for teachers, parents and caregivers for oral health questions and concerns. Targeting young children and their families will establish a foundation for success in keeping the mouth healthy and clean. Magic Tooth Bus has a goal in developing a fun oral health curriculum that is easy to follow and accessible for low-income families. Through the power of education and prevention instilled in the curriculum of Magic Tooth Bus, the community can be given the tools to combat the progression of disease.
