For a dermatologist, treating and removing skin tags, actinic keratosis, lentigo, common warts, plantar warts, genital warts, seborrheic keratosis and molluscum contagiosum is all in a day’s work. But, for a patient, the process may not be fully understood. There are many forms of wart removal treatments including electrosurgery, excision, laser therapy and chemical peels, but for some, cryosurgery (freezing) is the most common therapy.¹ Cryotherapy is the process in which many common warts and benign skin lesions are removed using a cold substance, like liquid nitrogen or portable “freeze spray” type products. The process is performed in the doctor’s office or exam room and often takes less than a minute to complete. Though multiple visits may be required, and your physician may apply salicylic acid between treatments, the entire procedure is relatively pain free and has a reported success rate of up to 70%. Cryosurgery isn’t for everyone, and for some, common warts may resolve on their own without treatment. Larger lesions may require additional interventions. Your physician will diagnose your condition prior to treatment and advise the best course of action for your specific situation.
