Vinyl Polysiloxane Impression Material (VPS) is a hydrophilic material used for dental and gingiva impressions. VPS enables a dentist to make more accurate impressions that resist distortion and tearing when being removed. This allows for better fitting restorations. VPS viscosity can range from light body; administered with a syringe, to a heavy body/ putty for bite impressions. Depending on the restoration or impression needed, various viscosity VPS are used. Set time can vary depending on viscosity and different VPS brands, but often ranges anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes. A dental practice should have a range of vinyl polysiloxane impression material viscosities to allow for a range of patient restorations and impressions.
