Learn to Safely Reopen Your Practice

Reopening for business means reopening safely. To ensure it is safe for your community to reopen, the White House has established three gating criteria your community must meet. Once meeting the criteria—related to reported coronavirus symptoms, cases, and hospital-care incidents—reopening will occur in phases, prioritizing business posing the lowest risk of infection for their employees and customers.

Phase One allows medical practices in states and regions satisfying the gating criteria to resume providing non-emergent surgical, chronic disease, and preventive care—but only as clinically appropriate, and on an outpatient basis, at facilities adhering to CMS recommendations.1

Criteria for Reopening Medical Practice after COVID-19

Even if your locality achieves its gating criteria, returning your practice to full strength—whether you've been treating patients throughout the pandemic or were temporarily closed—requires more than just flipping a switch.

CMS published a guide, Opening Up America Again: Re-opening Facilities to Provide Non-emergent Non-COVID-19 Healthcare: Phase I, detailing the precautions health care providers should take as they prepare to reopen. These precautions are suggested for all health care providers, regardless of whether your practice is treating COVID-19 patients, or whether you're in primary care or a specialist or a surgery center.

When your practice reopens, it could look much different than it did before the outbreak, due to:

  • Continued testing and awareness of COVID-19 symptoms
  • Protocols surrounding screening, sanitation, and personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Pandemic-influenced considerations for patient engagement, staff training, and care delivery

Just released on June 8th: CMS Recommendations for Re-Opening Facilities to Provide Non-emergent Non-COVID-19 Healthcare for Phase II.
