The year began as most years do, with people around the world full of excitement to pursue their personal and professional aspirations. But 2020 had other plans. Now, twelve months later, people everywhere are most ready to turn the page to a new year.
Yet as difficult as 2020 has been, we at Henry Schein enter 2021 full of hope for what is to come. It's in our DNA; the Company was founded in the depths of the Great Depression by the son of an immigrant who was right out of pharmacy school—Henry Schein himself. Henry, whom several of us had the pleasure to know, could see the sun breaks beyond the clouds.
It is in that spirit that I convey to you, on behalf of Team Schein, our profound appreciation for the heroic sacrifice of health care professionals in 2020 and our sincere belief that the grip of the pandemic will loosen in 2021 because of your continued efforts. The world's health care professionals, including the customers of Henry Schein, have proven to be tireless in their devotion to protecting life and livelihoods during the pandemic. We are awed by your dedication and stamina under the most trying circumstances any of us have ever experienced. We have no doubt that the combined power of the global healthcare community will lead us to better times next year.
For our part, Henry Schein remains committed to being a devoted ally for your cause. We continue to source from around the world the high-quality personal protective equipment in the volumes you need to practice safely. We continue to bring COVID-19 diagnostic tests to market for the benefit not only of your patients but your team. And we are pressing relevant authorities to ensure that office-based practitioners—the healthcare professionals that patients know and trust the most—are included in the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccines created by the world's brilliant pharmaceutical researchers.
We do this because your success is our success. We see our role as helping you to provide quality care for your patients. This isn't just about commerce; we have a shared humanity and a commitment to doing our part to make the world better and safer for all people.
A closing thought for the year ahead: I keep on my bookshelf a copy of "The Last Lion," the terrific biography of the great Winston Churchill, who led civilization through the darkest time of the 20th Century. Aside from being an extraordinary statesman, he was one of the great thinkers of his time, with an uncanny ability to frame ideas in the simplest of terms. Churchill once said: "I am an optimist. It does not seem too much use being anything else."
It is this spirit of optimism that we at Henry Schein will carry into 2021, in no small part because of you, our customers, whose profound contribution to the health of the world inspires us to do better every day for your patients and you. We thank you for the privilege of serving you.
Stay safe, be well, and may the joy of the holiday season stay with us through 2021.
