Virtual Care: Convenient and Safe Care Delivery

In Opening Up America Again: Re-opening Facilities to Provide Non-emergent Non-COVID-19 Healthcare: Phase I, published in April, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) makes the clear recommendation: "Maximum use of all telehealth modalities is strongly encouraged."

Prior to COVID-19, practices already had begun adopting telehealth because of the ability to reduce the cost of care, increasing regulatory approval, and improved patient engagement and accessibility.1 During the pandemic, however, both adoption of and demand for telehealth have accelerated. Providence Health & Services, a for-profit Catholic health care system operating multiple hospitals and more than a thousand clinics across eight states, went from 700 video visits a month to 70,000 a week.2

Two major factors are fueling the increasing demand for telehealth in the U.S., which is expected to grow by 64.3 percent during 20203:

  • Social distancing measures including minimizing in-person contact and reducing patient volume in waiting areas and exam rooms, and
  • The lowering of barriers related to compensation and copayments for telehealth.4

Telehealth is not suitable for every patient encounter, but it can reduce the need for an in-person exam. For more information about implementing telemedicine in your practice, read a quick guide published by the American Medical Association.
